Smoothies with Avocado – 3 Recipes to Satisfy Your Appetite

The avocado or avocado (in some South American countries) is a fruit that has numerous properties for your health. It contains almost all the nutrients and elements that the human body needs to survive and it has been found that it can contribute to the prevention of degenerative diseases.

Normally, it is consumed in salads, toasts, to prepare guacamole and is widely used in vegetarian or vegan diets.

But today you will learn to give it another use. You are going to discover three  avocado smoothies that are delicious.

They are quick and easy recipes to make, and an ideal breakfast substitute. In addition, they will keep you satiated throughout the morning, so you will avoid snacking between meals and satiate your appetite. ¿ What more can you ask ?

Avocado is famous for being fat (and it’s true). But before you go and think that you are going to gain weight if you consume it, stay with me for 5 minutes and you will see how everything you have heard so far are false myths. This fruit is going to become a must in your kitchen.

Does avocado make you fat or lose weight?

The million dollar question. The avocado neither makes you lose weight nor make you fat, but… ( here is a big “but” ).

According to a study conducted by Loma Linda University in California, the consumption of half an avocado a day produces a satiating effect on the body for a period of 3 to 5 hours.

Although it is true that it is a caloric food (about 160 calories per 100 grams), it must be said in its favor that it does not generate a rapid drop in blood glucose, which is what leads to the desire and the need to eat .

The ” good fats ” present in this fruit slow down the desire to eat food and, added to its ability to perform slow digestions, contributes to the body taking time to ask for food.

¿ And why I tell you all this ?

As well. Taking a smoothie with avocado when you eat breakfast, you will be able to arrive at mealtime with less appetite, which translates into a lower food intake. And translated even more, in the possibility of losing weight.

The famous avocado diet to lose weight (a real scam)

Now you may be thinking: If I eat avocado throughout the day, I will have less appetite, so I will lose 5 kilos in a week. Meeeec, bug! (and of the fat ones).

Lately a “miracle” diet is circulating on the internet that allows you to lose weight by consuming this fruit at all meals.

Taking too much of any food is a mistake. When beneficial properties of a food are discovered, they destroy it by turning it into a diet (avocado, pineapple, artichoke diet …). You may lose weight in the short term (which I doubt), but in the long run it will have a rebound effect, in addition to how harmful and unhealthy it can be for your health.

If you really want to lose weight, lead a healthy lifestyle and exercise regularly. There are no more secrets.

Avocado properties

Before we get down to business with smoothies, let me show you all the benefits it has.

I know, I roll more than a blind, but I want you to introduce this fruit into your diet once and for all.

  • It contains more potassium  (485 mg) than most fruits, even more than bananas (358 mg per 100 grams) which is the reference food for potassium.
  • It has a high source of folic acid , so it is highly recommended for pregnant women, as it prevents malformations in the fetus.
  • It is a fruit rich in essential fatty acids (especially omega-3), similar to olive oil. so it reduces LDL cholesterol, which is harmful to our health. It is an ideal substitute for animal fats, which is why it is highly recommended for vegetarian diets.
  • High in fiber , which together with its “good fats” make it produce a satiating effect on our body.
  • It contains more than 17 vitamins and minerals , among which are vitamin A, C and E, and all the B vitamins (except B12), as well as riboflavin, iron, calcium and magnesium.
  • It is also used as a mask for dry hair and is a good remedy for dry skin .

Green Smoothie Recipes with Avocado

Now that you know all its benefits, let’s get down to business!

Selection and storage tip: Try to keep the avocados you use ripe, heavy, dark green skinned, not shiny, and free of dents . Unripe avocados are common, but you can let them ripen in a paper bag at room temperature. When ripe, they can be kept in the fridge for about a week.

You should know that avocados, due to their low water content, make smoothies quite thick (as is the case with bananas). An avocado can contain 25% of its weight in fat, which although it is vegetable and healthy, you should use it in moderation. I advise you to take these shakes about three times a week at most and at breakfast time .

Avocado and Strawberry Smoothie

  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1 glass of orange juice (about 150 ml)
  • 5 whole strawberries
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 1 teaspoon flax seeds (optional)

How to make this smoothie

  1. Peel the avocado and remove the seed.
  2. Add the avocado, strawberries, orange juice, honey, and flax seeds to your blender.
  3. Beat until all the ingredients are integrated.
  4. You can use frozen strawberries to keep the smoothie cold.
  5. Add more orange juice if you like it thinner.

With this shake you will begin the day with a good shot of vitamin C . It is energetic and thanks to the avocado it will keep you satiated throughout the morning.

The strawberries are rich in antioxidants and vitamin C. In addition, they are very low in calories (33 calories per 100 grams).

As you know the oranges (to the like all citrus) they are very rich in vitamin C . Drinking orange juice almost daily has many benefits for your health . To name a few: reduction of “bad” cholesterol, prevents kidney stones (since it is rich in citrates), reduces cell oxidation and regulates intestinal transit.

Moroccan Avocado and Banana Smoothie

  • 1 avocado
  • A handful of almonds (between 6 and 10)
  • 1 banana
  • 2 tablespoons of honey
  • 200 ml of milk (you can use vegetable milk)

Steps to follow

  1. Peel the avocado and remove the seed.
  2. Peel the banana.
  3. Add all the ingredients to the mixer. In the original recipe you can use other nuts (peanuts, walnuts, cashews …)
  4. Beat until all the food is combined.
  5. You can freeze the banana or add ice to make it cooler.

To consider…

This recipe is very typical of Morocco , only that I have varied it a little.

Normally, they use 2 avocados instead of 1. It seemed a better idea to use just one, since it is much thinner and the calories with two would be too many. In addition, the banana is a fruit that makes smoothies quite thick.

Green Avocado and Apple Smoothie

Smoothie ingredients

  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1 Granny Smith or Golden apple
  • 1 cup of spinach
  • 150 ml of water
  • 1 tablespoon of honey or agave syrup

  1. Peel the avocado and remove the seed.
  2. Wash the apple. Peel it if it is not organic.
  3. Wash the spinach.
  4. Put all the ingredients in the blender and beat until well integrated.
  5. You can use some ice stones if you like it cold.

Smoothie benefits

The blocks have multiple properties for our body: reduce cholesterol levels in the blood, aid digestion and are a source rich in vitamin A . It is a fruit widely used in cleansing shakes, as it helps eliminate toxins from our body.

On the other hand are spinach . I have already talked in many posts about this vegetable (I use it very often in my smoothies) and why you should always have it on hand in your kitchen. They are great to start the day as they are a source against fatigue , they satisfy your appetite and are loaded with iron and antioxidants.
